Gompers Preparatory Academy (GPA), a UCSD CREATE Partnership School, was highlighted in a recent Union Tribune article on special education.

The article applauded GPA’s school-based approach to special education, in discussing the extremely high cost of educating students with special needs. GPA, along with some other charter schools in the area, has taken active responses to reduce costs while still improving educational quality.

On Saturday, January 14, UCSD’s EAOP staff (new members of CREATE’s team!) participated at the ICPHE Parent/Student Conference and Cash for College event as presenters, monitors, registration leaders, continental breakfast servers, and directors of FASFA application preparation.

CREATE Welcomes EAOP and TRIO Outreach Programs!

If you spend a day with CREATE’s staff, you might already meet a teacher getting professional development support, an inner city youth group with a passion for health, or a group of students learning critical skills for literacy and writing.

Now CREATE welcomes the addition of two leading partners whose mission is to identify and serve close to 4,000 low income, first generation youth with academic preparation and college-ready services.

UCSD’s Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) currently serves 22 sites in San Diego and Imperial Counties, working with a mix of school sites and community centers. EAOP provides college advising, college and career exploration activities, online tutoring and SAT preparation to over 3,000 students that are from historically disadvantaged and low socio-economic status populations.

TRIO Outreach Programs consists of three federal pre-college programs: Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science and Talent Search. TRIO Outreach Programs works with over 800 students across 16 schools providing college advising, tutoring support, Saturday workshops, and even a summer residential experience at UCSD. The mission and goal of these federal programs are to ensure that students graduate from high school and then immediately enroll in post-secondary education and graduate with their degree.

EAOP and TRIO Outreach Programs work with specific sites, and serve students from 9^th through 12^th grade. Services are intensified during the senior year, with both programs providing college application reviews and financial aid assistance. EAOP and TRIO also track students’ grades, coursework, test scores and post-secondary enrollment.

Developing research-based, best practice strategies for reducing the college-going gap for low income and first generation students, including through exploring the role of new technologies in youth outreach, will be the foundation of this new partnership with CREATE.

A UCSD/CREATE partner school, Gompers Preparatory Academy, recently received media attention for its gains in student achievement and its success-oriented school culture.

Gompers recently celebrated what administrators noted was “the largest API gain of any middle or high school in San Diego Unified,” meeting all of its state API targets. As administrators wrote happily to CREATE partners via email, “Every sub group in English Language Arts achieved federal proficiency due to the significant gains in total proficiency across the board in English.”

CREATE assists Gompers Preparatory Academy to develop a college-going culture of learning by linking in UCSD students who serve as tutors, as well as offering expertise in teacher professional development, research, evaluation, governance, and parent education.
