This past weekend, over 500 9th – 12th grade young leaders from Los Angeles County, Orange County and San Diego County — all participants in federal TRIO Programs — joined the UCSD Chancellor for the 23rd Annual SoCal WESTOP Student Leadership Conference. The event, organized by UCSD TRIO Outreach Programs, highlighted leadership skills and career pathways to STEM.
As the Chancellor’s blog noted, “UC San Diego hosted this year’s student leadership conference for the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel’s Southern California chapter. More than 500 high school students from San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange Counties’ TRiO programs attended the event. The program focused on leadership skills and career pathways to science, technology, engineering and math fields. Chancellor Khosla stopped by the conference to welcome the students to our campus. The keynote speakers included San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and Professor Angelica Gutierrez from Loyola Marymount University College of School of Business.”
