Enjoy a day of exciting science and engineering activities geared to boost interest in STEM education at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineer’s 8th Annual Empower High School Conference at UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering on May 3. High school students and their families from the San Diego region are invited to attend the free conference featuring STEM-centered workshops, lab tours, hands-on demonstrations and panel discussions. Breakfast and lunch are included.
According to Sandra Medina, outreach chair for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at UC San Diego, the purpose of SHPE’s Empower High School Conference is to promote STEM among students of underrepresented communities as well as provide information about higher education.
“Our goal is to increase STEM awareness and motivate students to continue onto higher education,” Medina said. “We also want to provide parents with information that can answer many of their concerns regarding pathways to college and what they can do to help and support their child.”
The event is sponsored by SPAWAR and the IDEA Student Center at UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering. For more information, download a flyer or register online at http://shpe.ucsd.edu/empower.html.
