DoD STEM Ambassador: Chris Ray

Chris Ray has spent the past 13 years teaching in a wide variety of settings including two years each in the Philippines, Nepal, and Armenia before settling in San Diego, California.  Chris’s teaching career includes 6th grade math through Algebra II, public speaking, professional communication, and a math course for non-math majors at the American University of Armenia. He supports math enrichment and exploration opportunities for students outside the classroom with a weekly MATHCOUNTS club, and he collaborates with two other math teachers hold the MathFest San Diego competitions twice a year. Chris holds a master’s of science in teaching, learning and curriculum from Drexel University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

“Too often I hear students claim that they cannot “do” math.  I challenge them to view math as a skill that can always be improved and enhanced, and I encourage them to push themselves both in terms of the intellectual challenge of math problem solving as well as the pursuit of how math helps us make sense of the world around us.”

Chris Ray works closely with UCSD Mathematics Project Director, Ovie Soto, on the implementation of the Summer Math Academies for Students and Summer Math Institute for Teachers. Chris also works closely with Genevieve Esmende and Claudia Pruitt in organizing the MathFest San Diego events, competition-style events for all middle-school students in San Diego county.

Their upcoming event is on March 16, 2024.
